このフロートの方がお屋敷より相当にミステリアスなのでした...

サンノゼの観光名所となっている「ウィンチェスター‧ミステリー‧ハウス」。地元の人達には、「観光客をターゲットにしたくだらない名所」と思われているようです。そういう「くだらない名所」が好きな私達夫婦は早速、行って来ました（笑）。現実に、悲しい過去を背負った女性のお屋敷ですが、お屋敷は、新しくペンキが塗られ、遊園地にあるようなミステリーハウスっぽい感もありました。それでも、それなりに楽しむことができます。
このお屋敷は、幼子と夫を次々と亡くし生涯悲観にくれたお金持ち未亡人が建てた、ものすごーく風変わりなお屋敷です。この女性、サラさんと言うのですが、生涯を喪に服し、重傷の関節炎に悩まされて生涯を閉じました。お金は山のようにあっても、心の悲しみや関節炎の痛みは癒すことができなかったのです。このお屋敷、とにかく変わっています。160もの部屋を作り、その多くは一度も「完成」を迎えることなく延々と改築工事がなんと！24時間休む間もなく38年間続けられました。サラさんは、「13」という不吉な番号に異常なほどこだわり、屋敷のあちらこちらに「13」の物を取り付けました（例：13のトイレ、13の窓等）。現代の私達の感覚から考えて、理解に苦しむことばかりですが、自分も彼女が生きた時代に生まれ、彼女と同じ状況に陥ったとしたら、もしかしたら同じようなことをしていたかもしれません（もっとクレージーなことをしていたかも！）。幽霊がよく目撃されるというお屋敷の地下ツアーにも参加しましたが、結局、幽霊らしきものは目撃しないままツアーを終了しました（残念！）。「ウィンチェスター‧ミステリー‧ハウス」では、夜のツアーも行っています（さすが「観光客名所」です！）。せっかくのミステリーハウスなのですから、夜のツアーの方がムード満点では？ロマンチックムードではなく、幽霊ムードということですが。
People told us that it's a tourist trap. Locals laugh at this famous mystery house, the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. That's perfect for us as our plan is to visit every tourist trap in California! A tourist trap? Yes, it definitely was. But, we still had loads of fun. We did the full tour which included a house tour, garden tour, and a basement tour. Putting the tourist trap factor aside, this house is really the creation of a very sad woman with lots of money. She lost her child and her husband. She then suffered severe arthritis for many years. She had no one to enjoy her wealth with. Her money couldn't cure her pain, physically or emotionally. But yes! the house is very weird. Her obsession with the number 13 got out of control. The never ending 24 hour construction of this house kept her lonely life busy. If I were born in that period, and in her circumstances, I might have done something similar or crazier perhaps! We didn't see any ghosts in the basement this time. If you are more adventurous and want to spend more money on this so called "tourist trap," you can do a night tour with a flash light!
